dyslexia & Access to work scheme (ATW)
The Access to Work Scheme – (AtW) is operated through your local Job Centre Plus office. Access to Work can help you if your health or disability affects the way you do your job. It gives you and your employer advice and support with extra costs which may arise because of your needs.
You may need to have an ‘occupational health assessment’, carried out. This can be arranged via the Local Health Authority (LHA), or under the ‘Access to Work’ scheme. The assessment will then identify and recommend areas to enable the dyslexic employee to benefit in the workplace.
Once a ‘need’ is identified, the Right to Work scheme can pay for part of the adjustments. Employers (company bosses) are required to share part of the cost with the ATW by paying the first £300 plus a further minimum 20% of the cost, up to £10,000. (This cost may be able to be offset against tax.)
In this section you will find extensive information for dyslexia; including; dyslexia tests; dyslexia assessments; dyslexia checklist; literacy problems; reading and spelling and much more.
Access to Work will pay 100 % of the approved costs, if you are:
• self-employed
• unemployed and starting a new job
• working for an employer and been in a job for less than six weeks
or
• people changing jobs in your company
Whatever your employment status, Access to Work will also pay 100 % of the approved costs of help with:
• support workers
• fares to work
• communicator support at interview
In all these cases, the employer orders the products, listed by the Access to Work scheme and pays for them. They then claim the amount back off Access to Work. This scheme may be able to pay for equipment, adapting premises or a support worker.
Further information can be found at your local jobcentre or the Access to Work Website.
