health & dyslexia: developmental therapies - phonographix

PhonoGraphix has been helpful for some children with dyslexia or specific learning difficulties.

Dr Diane McGuiness, a professor of psychology of South Florida University developed the Phono-Graphix approach to reading. Her book, 'Why Children Can't Read', has become a valuable educational tool in America.

Her son, Geoffrey McGuiness and his wife, Carmen, have continued to develop her work. Their programme is so successful that they now have Phono-Graphix centres in many countries of the world. Many dyslexic people have found this programme to be very beneficial.

Phono-Graphix, like its name suggests, is a phonics-based reading system that starts with the sounds of the language and letters. The teacher says each sound first and the child replicates the sounds - as they hear it. The Phono-Graphix method teaches children that groups of letters are sounds.

English is broken down into 134 of these sounds from 1 - 4 letters. The teacher shows the child a picture of an object, such as a dog. The child says the word for the picture and listens for the first sound 'd'. This continues until all 134 sounds are learnt. Once students can identify the sounds of letters they can work on the more complex words.
